House of Blues, Anaheim Well, well, well, imagine my surprise when I came here to update this page that I found out this page didn't exist in my little collection of half-drunken reviews of bands I've seen in the past and present. Of all the shows I've seen these guys should have been the inspiration for at least one measly little missive. In any event, The Damned was one of the stand out attractions I saw back in a flurry of concert-going activity in early 2002. Headlining a show opened by Deadsy, which caused a bunch of other goth-related obsessions on their their own, the night was one of those to be remembered, by me at least. This last time I saw them, circa late 2006, it was pretty much the same show as the first. Vanian and friends truly know how to put on a show and after all these years they still have the talent and presence to pull it off. My enthusiasm for this last show was only dampened slightly since I am sadly more grown up and tired at this point, more from work than anything else mind you. I've also seem these guys once more at the HOB which for some reason didn't seem to come off all that well. Oddly that was the only show I've seen with Vanian's wife playing bass. In all instances the crowd was a mix of goth, old punks, young punks, and guys who've just grown up and forgotten how to be kewl. Thankfully, I can still hang with the first two crowds. Plenty of latex and black leather-clad ladies abounded to make for an additional feast for the eyes, and once The Damned came on the pit finally took off when surfing and slamming aplenty. Most of the show's playlists came from Grave Disorder, but the last one in 2006 played more heavily from their other albums as well. As seems to be the custom, most shows end with Smash It Up and a nice mooning by the Captain. Great shows, great times .... You can find The Damned's homepage here. |
