Eric Sardinas

The Coach House
House of Blues, Anaheim

The odd thing about Eric Sardinas for me is that I love slide guitar, I like seeing him play live, but for some odd reason his CD's just irritate the crap out of me. Go figure. HOWEVER, he does put on one hell of a live act. The two shows I've seen were both basically the same, although at the Coach House he did walk down a couple of rows of tables (not quite that easy at the HOB). Always dressed in black (I have never seen him or a picture of him in anything resembling a color), sporting a black cowboy hat, black boots, black lacey shirt, long black hair ... you get the picture ... Eric is as entertaining visually as he is with his music. As far as I can tell, there's a lot of women out there who'd be more than willing to backstage with guy, women who are old enough to know better by the way. Anyway ... enough of his oozing sexuality. For me his guitar playing is the thing. Playing nothing but slide, on nothing but somewhat beaten up black (of course) dobros, Eric puts on one hell of a fast-paced show. There's no real slow moody blues numbers in his sets, just lots of fast and fancy fretwork and a picking hand that flies faster than I don't know what. I'd like to see him try some slower stuff once in a while, at times he's a little too one dimensional in showing off how fast and hard he can play. I will continue to see him though, it's rare these days to see guys playing this type of music and actually doing it well. Sooooo.... if you like slide guitar, or if you're a woman who likes slide guitarists in black, check Eric out. He plays fairly regularly here in the Southland and is well worth the price of an evening out.

On an related side note ... ha ha ha ... standing up front at the HOB (one of the very few guys, I'll add) I was lucky enough to have Eric toss me his slide. A minute later some guy comes up and offers me like $80 for the damn thing ... he went home empty handed by the way. Then after another minute I feel this tap on my shoulder and it's one of Eric's stage hands wanting the slide back. Too funny. He was kewl enough to offer me another one, and I understand wanting one of your favorite slides back ... but then why throw the real one in the first place, lol? In any event, I gave it back to him and now I've got one of his others sitting in my slide box. And for you guitarists out there .... it's a thick brass tapered pinky slide.
