Naked Eyes

HOB, Anaheim

Ugh. Eighties night at the old HOB. I hadn't intended to go to this show, but given a choice between a movie and an early night or a little live music my girlfriend and I decided to opt out for the late night music option. It ended up being ok, I had a few drinks and she enjoyed the show. Whee! In any event, back in the 80's (god it's so fucking long ago) I was way more into punk and other electronic bands than I was the British synth-pop that pretty much took over the radio. I have to admit I've always had a secret hatred for that Always Something There to Remind me song and tonight was no exception. But that doesn't detract from their performance.

As best as I could tell, the only real remnant of the 80's band was the singer, Pete Byrne. Evidently his partner Rob had died a number of years ago, and I don't know if they had any other musicians. This night Pete had two guys on keyboard and a drummer. He played a little guitar here and there, and even had a nice looking black top Ovation. Mmmmm, black top Ovation. They didn't really play a long set, maybe 45 minutes at tops, and a lot of people in the audience spent that time talking and chatting each other up. I say a lot more about the crowd in the ABC review. Heh. The crowd did wake up for their two little hits, Promises, Promises and that insipid Remind Me song. For some reason Pete thought he had to do a little acoustical version of each song before turning on the keyboards. Hmmm. As far as the music went, well they didn't totally suck, but I still wasn't really into it. Their sound tech should be fired though ... sounded like they were playing through a wall of mud. The openers had a much cleaner, tighter sound. Oh well.

All I can really say is that if you like or liked Naked Eyes, it might be worth it to you to drop some change Pete's way. He is a pretty damn good performer, but only if you can stand the music.
