House of Blues, Anaheim Opening for the good Reverend Horton Heat as the first act, these guys actually impressed me with their country-fried I don't know what kind of music. I guess it could be kind of punky, southern, country, rockabilly or something. So up front they've got one skinny, frenetic little freak of a man on vocals and harmonica. I would liken this guy to the singer for Throw Rag, Sean Doe, but he's not quite as freaky and dare I say so without seeming gay ... sexy, and nowhere near as tattooed. He's also less of a singer, but that's hard to determine since he was singing into his distorted harmonica mike most of the night. To his credit though, this guy is a great harmonica player. The rest of the band is rounded out by a guy on electric guitar, who I swear to god I've seen in some other band, an upright bassist, and a drummer. Playing a good upbeat set for about 40 some odd minutes these guys really grabbed my attention and gave me a newfound appreciation. It didn't seem that most of the crowd was all that impressed my them, the old folks there to see Junior Brown didn't really like them and the rest of the kiddies were too impatient for the Reverend. But what matters the most is that I liked them, heh. While I'd have been happier to see Throw Rag on the bill for this show since they seem to feed off the Reverend's vibe and vice versa, I'm not disappointed to have seen them. In all events, I'd go see them play their own show You can find the Shaker's homepage here. |
