Lavay Smith and The Coach House I've seen Miss Thing twice now, and the two shows couldn't have been much farther apart. The show at the Coach House was the first time I'd gone to see Lavay, who is based out of San Francisco. Seeing her ad on a Coach House flyer, me and some of the boys at work got intrigued and decided to download some music. Finding it to be old swing-style crooning, most of the others bailed for the darker side of town, while I stayed on a enjoyed the tunes. Long story short, I decided to go see her and ended up loving her act in the process. Every once in a while you get to see some really talented musicians perform for you. This show was no exception. Hosting one of the best swing/jazz ensembles I've seen in my life, the talent up on stage was phenomenal. Lavay was no slouch either, with a voice that fits this style of music perfectly and the look and moves required to pull it off some 60 odd years after it was first in style. It turned out to be a truly enjoyable evening, and the crowd at the Coach House seemed really appreciative. The show at the House of Blues was another story and it broke my heart. Selling maybe 200 tickets tops, this was the worst show in terms of attendance that I've ever seen at the HOB. Nobody and I mean nobody ventured out on the floor, and I just felt so bad that the talent and effort the band and Lavay were showing that night was going unnoticed and unappreciated by so many. A few kids finally did go up and dance a little as the show progressed, but at times you could have heard a pin drop between numbers. Really sad. If however, you get the chance to see Lavay and her band, and you like old swing music, you've got to see them ... I guarantee you won't regret it one bit. You can find Lavay's website here. |
