Lacuna Coil

House of Blues, Anaheim

I have been waiting forever to see Lacuna Coil. Some three years worth of missed opportunities, etc., etc. Between cancellations, openers for large venue acts I didn't care to see, and playing so far away in L.A. on a weeknight I wasn't able to go, pretty much made my expectations rise and rise. I was expecting a somewhat different experience than I had that night. I was figuring there were going to be a bunch of goth metalheads there, but it ended up being a pretty normal run-of-the-mill crowd. Relatively tame and not a whole hell of a lot of excitement. It seemed to me at times that the rest of the audience was there pretty much just to see Christina and nothing else. I may be wrong in that assessment, but you never know. Anyway, they came on stage all dressed in these little black dress outfits, sort of looking like a flock of pilgrims from early American history, but without the hats and the black powder rifles. They played primarily from their latest CD, which for some stupid reason I didn't even know was out. Go figure. They didn't play the one song ... Stars ... I had been dying to hear live, but the night still went off well. They played well, sounded good, and while they didn't offer a whole hell of a lot visually, and didn't have a ton of excitement and energy, the still did admirably. As for Christina, well, she's Christina and looked good on stage, but looked better offstage according to one of my buddies in security. Sigh. One day he'll get me back there. Missed out on KMFDM and Lacuna Coil. Maybe he could work a deal with Kittie the next time they come around. Hee hee. In any event, while it didn't live up to my ridiculously high expectations, I still enjoyed the show, and would go again a little better prepared. If you like their music, check them out, it's worth it.
