House of Blues, Anaheim To be perfectly honest, I had no real interest in going to this show. That was until I found out the Supersuckers were opening. So off I went to spend $40 and see what might just turn out to be an interesting show. I later found out, much to my dismay, that the Supersuckers were performing a country act that night. I went anyway. Well, Jerry Lee can still rock. He played his tunes and some others from the fifties era, and sadly only played a short 45 minute set with no encore. He got a few well-deserved raspberrys for that one. I understand Jerry must be fairly old by now and probably can't hang as much as he used to, but I saw a longer, better performance out of Johnny Winter, and that dude is fucked up. Jerry's voice held up well, and while the wild antics and playing piano with his feet are both long gone, musically he still rocked. He pretty much spent the night front and center with his piano, and really didn't do too much else than sing and play while sitting down. It was good to see a legend in action, and I don't regret going, but the show and the ticket price just didn't jive. Ended up feeling a little ripped off and dismayed. But that was just me. The rest of the sold-out crowd, who were a lot older and a lot less hip than me, lol, ate him up, no-encore-boos notwithstanding. There were a few fellow Supersuckers fans in attenance, but they had also come to see Jerry more than Eddie and the boys. Oh well. I've also never seen a larger collection of way-too-exposed old-woman sweater meat in my life ... yuck. I'd been told a story at the ranch once about a plastic surgeon who was asked if he'd ever seen an ugly breast ... he said no .... you gotta wonder if he would have changed his mind after this night. Seriously though, if you're a fan and don't mind shelling out the money, I guess it would be a good show to see. He does have a great backing band and while he may not be as spry as he was in earlier times, the price of admission is almost worth it to see a legend perform. As for me, should I ever been in the mood for Jerry, I'll tune the radio to KRTH and stay home. You can find Jerry's website here. |
