Tom Hambridge

House of Blues, Anaheim

Opening for George Thorogood and the Destroyers at the House of Blues, Hambridge and his band played a great, up-tempo 45-minute set that gave the well-over 40 crowd there something to dance a little too while getting liquored up for George's performance. With a four piece band consisting of two guitarists, a bass player and a drummer, front-man and vocalist Hambridge put on a pretty good show, even if he looks like Eddie Money. For being somewhat of an unknown (to me anyway) he had a really great stage presence and looked like he'd been doing this for quite some time. The music they laid down was pretty much the basic rock and roll blues stuff you'd hear in any regular bar on a Friday or Saturday night. No gutsy or singing blues, just good times for all ... pretty much what you'd expect out of an opener for the Destroyers. I guess Tom's written a bunch of stuff for himself and others, and has even won a couple of Emmy's. I can't say he'd totally be my cup of tea though ... not really edgy enough ... I prefer to keep the double-entendres and innuendos to places other than concerts. You're supposed to be able to say it straight up with rock and roll ... these days anyway ... my ding-a-ling was so long long ago. Anyway, he does have a tight band and put together a great sound and performance. If you're looking for something to do ... they're probably worth a slight effort to see ... short of the really dumb drum thing he did. Ugh. Hate that.

One other thing ... their guitarist looks like a big Uncle Fester with a hat. And it's not me being mean either, I noticed it and kept my mouth shut, after which my girlfriend informed me he looked like Fester, after which another group in the audience started shouting Fester, Fester .... Gotta love it!
