G.B.H.

House of Blues, Anaheim
With Toxic Narcotic and two others

I didn't really know what to expect at this show. I wasn't totally familiar with the bands playing that night having never really followed any of them years ago or as of late. Nevertheless I ended up going after much hemming and hawing and actually wound up having a good time. This show had to be the wildest show I've seen at the HOB. It rates a very close second to the Kittie show at Canes. The only real difference between the two was there wasn't as much jumping on top of the crowd or blood-letting as there was at the Kittie show. There were a ton of kiddies there, which kind of surprised me. I ended up feeling rather old in comparison. Maybe the older punks have grown up and  moved on, but it was fun to see the youngin's so-to-speak getting into it. There were three opening acts, one of which, Toxic Narcotic, seemed more new metal than punk, but which kicked ass anyway. All four bands had the same configuration: singer, bass, guitarist, and drummer. Gibsons and overdriven Marshalls abounded. All of the shows contained an ever-increasing amount of aggravation and moshing which never stopped until GBH left the stage. The time spent waiting between shows was pleasantly short and the total show lasted almost four hours. Not bad for $14 bucks. All of the bands had lots of energy and did very little talking between songs. Some of the other bands around could learn a thing or two from these acts in terms of keeping their shows moving. I can't say I'm a huge fan of punk anymore, so I can't really comment too fairly on the music of the night, but I was able to get into it a lot more than some of the other alternative shows I've seen lately. Just good old fashioned punk rock ... loud, hard, and fast. The crowd was a visual treat as well ... not a lot of makeup, but enough ripped clothes, patches and hair to die for to make it interesting. And where the hell did these kids learn about Crass? All in all a good night ... I'm glad I went.
