House of Blues, Anaheim Disclaimer: I love bands with girls playing guitars. The Melvin's are no exception to that rule. That being said ... I've had the pleasure of seeing The Dwarves twice now ... both times as opening acts for other bands. The first time I didn't even know who the hell they were, and couldn't even remember their name the next day. The second time I remembered. The first show they opened along with the Throw Rag and somebody else for The Damned, I believe it was. Girl on bass in a catgirl suit ... mmmm. Singer in a kilt ... hmmmm. Drummer and the rhythm guitarist kind of normal ... ok. The lead guitarist strips down to a red latex thong ... ewwwwww. This freaky act fit the night by all means, leading up into Throw Rag no less, but ewwww. Nothing worse than a skinny white dude, and I do mean skinny, in a thong. Oh yeah, did I mention his red latex devil hood? Anyway, the second show was a tad more normal costume wise and once I got over the realization that I was seeing them for the second time, I paid more attention to their music. Which isn't bad after all. Just good punky stuff. Nothing spectacular, mind you. Nothing too terribly original, mind you. But it was good ... and they put on a good live show. What more do you need. I don't know if or when they headline shows, but they might be worth it at a small club somewhere. They seem to have a slight following down here, which is kind of neat. I don't really know what to say other than that really. They're worth throwing a few bucks out to see ... if you can brave the guy in the red thong! Oh, and if the bass player ever wants to come over for drinks ..... You can find the
Dwarves'
website here. |
