DEK

HOB, Anaheim

So like I show up to my first punk show in a long time and these guys come out at as one of the opening acts for the Adolescents. I've seen a few kiddie groups over the years, some horribly wrong, some wickedly talented, but they've always been more from the blues genre. Which now that I think of it is kind of weird. But those thoughts aside, these guys looked about the youngest yet.

So anyway, these kiddies are like a four piece punk ensemble, with the youngest guy being 11 or something, at least I think that's one of the guys in the audience told me. They didn't really get any crowd reaction going, which was kind of odd to me given the average age of the well-under 21 crowd. You'd think they'd appreciate their own a little more than the geezers like me who'd be headlining that night.  Based out of Seattle, I guess, DEK pushed their latest or first CD only a few times during the night which was a blessing and played a pretty damn respectable half hour set. It always pisses me off when kids like these can play better now than I ever will be able to, but oh well. They had a totally respectable stage presence to boot, with enough animation and some of the flashiest clothes I've seen on stage since I saw KC and the Sunshine Band or Parliament. I imagine they'll be a force to be reckoned with if girls, drugs, booze and personalities don't pull them apart in the coming years. More or less these guys put on a damn fine performance with enough rockin and flashiness to make it all interesting. Don't know if I'd lay down more cash to see 'em headlinin a gig, but that's more just cuz for whatever reason the new punks don't seem as exciting as the old punks. A sign of my own freakin' age I guess. On the other hand though, I wouldn't be at all upset to see them open for somebody I really want to see ... and who knows ... at the right time on the right night, I might lay down some dough just to see 'em anyway. Little punk rock girls will love these guys too .... lol.

And in case you're wondering I guess DEK stands for don't even know. And I don't even know what that's supposed to mean. Heh.
