House of Blues, Anaheim So who'd of thunk it? Bruce Willis kicked some respectable ass up on that stage. Surrounding himself with some really damn good musicians from I know not where, Bruce put on a 2 hour long harmonica and blues extravaganza that put a lot of the other acts I've seen at the HOB to shame. For starters, the lineup: Bruce playing harmonica and singing, the Krispy Kreme King on backups and harmonica, two guitars, one bass, a drummer, and one or two other guys in the back maybe playing some keyboards and backup vocals (couldn't really seem them all that well). The music was mostly covers and some originals, nothing too horribly recognizable which was neat ... straight-up blues covers that everyone knows just kind of tend to stink I think. Surprisingly, Bruce did a really good job of putting this band together and singing and playing with them. It really came across that he's doing just for the fun of it all (I'm certain he doesn't need the cash), and is serious about sounding good and putting on a good show. A welcome break from other actor-based bands and for that matter, some supposedly committed rock bands. While not stellar or awe-inspiring by any stretch of the imagination, Bruce's singing and harmonica playing fit in well and he never tried to overcome or showboat over his fellow band mates. There is really only one bad thing I could say about the performance and that was when Bruce pulled out the old James Brown "I've fallen and I can't get up routine." No cape, but a couple of roadies helped him back up. It was kind of funny, but compared to how well everything else was going that night, it hardly seemed necessary. Bruce bantered with the crowd a few times, but kept it short, and kept the tempo up and the focus on the music. All I can say is I was really impressed by everyone on the stage that night and was more than happy to drive home with a bunch of Krispy Kreme doughnut dust in my hair. He's well worth the time and money to see should you get the chance. And guys .... there's mostly women there ... heh heh! Bruce's website (with a lot more than just the Accelerators) can be reached here. |
