Bo Diddley

House of Blues, Anaheim

I went to see Bo in my quest to see as many of the old legends as I can before their passing. I've missed too many already between Hendrix (I was too young), Stevie Ray, and John Lee Hooker (who died just after I started this madness). It was one of those magical nights where the 75-year old performer really shined. Sadly, Bo was suffering from a burn, which between the burn and the resulting surgery, had ended up hurting both his leg and his arm. But like a trooper, Bo came to the show and performed, even though at times he was in obvious pain from his injuries. Playing for an astounding 90 minutes (30 more than he was supposed to), Bo sat in a chair front and center with a Roland amp and his legendary boxtop guitar. To my dismay I was just slightly off center and only got to steal a few glances at the guitar, but the fact that I was a mere ten feet away from this legend more than made up for it. There's something about his guitar and his playing that is just so damn different, but oh so good. Bo was accompanied by a keyboard player, bassist, second guitarist and a drummer. Altogether they had a great sound and were the classiest bunch of musicians backing up a legend that I've seen to date. No airs or attempted upstaging whatsoever, ills that have plagued far too many shows for my own taste. In any event, Bo went through his set, spoke a few times to the audience, and even did a rap number which turned out surprisingly well. He's got a great sense of humor and genuinely seemed to be having the time of his life up on stage. This show will be long remembered as one of the finest shows I've seen of this sort. Go see him play while you still can ... he's not in the Hall of Fame for no reason.
