Blondie

House of Blues, Anaheim

So how many guys my age went to sleep at night wondering how to get into Deborah Harry's pants? Well maybe not all of you, but she did occupy one part of my poster-lined bedroom in the sacred spot next to Wendy O. Williams. Anyway, so after what seems like an eternity, I jaunted down to the HOB to see what had become of that new wave icon from the 80's. To be honest, I wasn't really expecting that much, and judging by the looks of the crowd that came that night, I figured I'd be right. First big disappointment ... no opener. I think Blondie has this stupid idea that a DJ spinning some tunes is the same as a live band, but it's not. I'm used to having an hour or so wait before the first act goes on, which gives the booze a little time to break down my blood-brain barrier, but after two hours it was just downright irritating. I came to see live music damnit. When the band finally decided to come on stage I was already kind of fed up with the evening with the only mitigating factor being I was with a friend that evening to help pass the time. I think there were three or four of the original Blondie crew performing that night including Chris and Debbie. They sang all the hits everyone would have expected and some new songs off their just-released newbie. In an odd way I kind of liked the new stuff a little better, but it was fun to hear the old stuff again too. Deborah's voice isn't quite what it used to be, and she won't be sparking any of those late night dreams, but all in all they put on a pretty admirable performance. Don't get me wrong, she still has a great voice, but years ago it was a heck of a lot more intense. I had seen Blondie perform on some PBS show about a year ago, and was totally unimpressed by it. This time however, I was pleasantly surprised by both the talent these guys have and their ability to still express it after all this time. If you were at all a fan of the band back in the day, they're definitely worth a trip to go see live. And try to put a little more enthusiasm into your night out than the bozos who attended the show with me on my night out!
