Big Sandy and His Fly Rite Boys

House of Blues, Anaheim

I'd been meaning to see Big Sandy for some time but for one reason or another I always seemed to end up missing him. I finally got to see him as the opener for Lee Rocker and The Knitters. The skinny ... Big Sandy on guitar, an additional guitar player, drummer, stand-up bass player and a guy sliding some mean steel pedal guitar. Mmmm. Mmmm. Not the most visually appealing band in the world, what they lacked in style they more than made up for in music (which is what really counts, isn't it?). Playing a respectable 30 minute set of some good rockabilly/country tunes, I ended up being more than happy to have finally caught their act. A little slower and less edgy than other groups like Lee Rocker or Horton Heat, they still put on one darn good show. Sandy has a great voice and comes across with his band as one class act ... something that seems to be a rarity these days. They don't seem to play around here a whole hell of a lot, but if you're into rockabilly, go check 'em out.
