House of Blues, Anaheim So I'm old and remember when Bad Religion was just starting out. So what? So I ponied up the dough and went to see them play again with a large contingent of my fellow older brethren. More on that in a sec. The band was good, sounded pretty much the same, and performed one of the better punk shows I've seen in a long while. Playing for a good hour and half with few irritating pauses to BS, and choosing a good selection from their 20-some odd year career, I was actually surprised at how well these guys have stood the test of time. Hell, they even went far enough back to play Fuck Armageddon This is Hell (much to my delight, if not the crowd's). The crowd seemed to appreciate songs more along the line of Infected and 20th Century Digital Boy, but hey, to each his own. Greg's vocals still stood up and the band's stage presence, although somewhat aged after all these years (and their somewhat turbulent line-up history) still came through admirably. They were worth every one of the $20 I spent on the show, and it would have been worth more. It was a pleasure to see that some of the old school can still cut it without turning into Social Distortion. The only sad part of the night was the crowd, who were a lot older and a lot more conservative than I was expecting. I would have at least thought that some of the old punkers like myself would have been a little less uptight ... but oh well. We've all gotta grow up sooner or later. The only other real note on the audience was the abundance of women in the audience ... who'd of thunk? Not that I'm complaining mind you, it was a welcome break from some of those all-boy metal shows I've been to lately. You can find Bad Religion's homepage here. |
