House of Blues, Anaheim In all honesty I've never been that big of a fan of Anthrax. I decided to go to the show, even though I was pretty beat from the two previous nights partying in the pit with Throw Rag and the good Reverend Horton Heat. I had planned to take it easy and just hang at the bar and passively watch the show ... none of that happened. The band wasn't at all what I had expected to see, especially since I hadn't checked them out prior to the show. I was figuring there would be a four or five guys up on stage with long hair playing mediocre speed metal. Ooops. Missed that one by like a mile. Anthrax is one of those bands that just puts on a kick ass show and probably would do so even if the music stank. Of course the band was great, the music was great, and the mostly-male, mostly-angry, mostly-drunk crowd in attendance showed their appreciation by bringing the house to a boil ... in stark contrast to the reception the opening acts, Lamb of God and E-Town Concrete, received. Watching the singer John Bush and the two very loud guitar players, Rob Caggiano and Scott Ian from two rows back was totally awesome ... these guys were just dripping with enthusiasm from start to finish and the crowd reciprocated, forcing me out of the pit after about an hour and half of pushing, squishing and sweating like I haven't experienced there too many times before. With hardly any hair between them, one mohawk, two shaved noggins, and one with a massive beard, John, Scott and Rob looked a lot more wicked than any of the hair-farmer bands could ever be. Oddly, Frank Bello, the bass player, seemed somewhat out of place with his long locks, but he still kicked ass. John kept the crowd amped the whole night and mercifully kept the talking to a minimum, only spending a few seconds to preach about loving the French and Italians and supporting the troops overseas. In any event, the evening was one loud, hard-driving event which really surprised the hell out of me. Anthrax is quite the show band, I can't say I'll probably ever steal or buy one of their CDs, but I will be there the next time they come to town ... and you should be there too. You can find Anthrax's homepage here. |
