ABC / Martin Fry

HOB, Anaheim

Ugh again. As the second half or whatever of the Naked Eyes / ABC 80's night synth-pop fest at the HOB, ABC or what's left of them put in the worst of the two performances. Eek. It appears that Martin Fry is another of those 80s heroes looking to restore a little of the fame of their glory days by putting on shows for 40-something over-the-hill guys and dolls. It also appears that he is the sole remnant of ABC, although it's hard to tell. Martin still does have a voice after all this time and can still sing, but the lack of anything new to offer except rehashes of the same old crap I've been listening to for 25 years now didn't really help him out. As all of us from this age of the dinosaur can relate to, his looks have faded a tad, but that silly-ass gold lame suit still seems to fit him, unless he was dumb enough to go out and buy another one. This fucker needs to grow up a bit and at least try to be a little more let's say ... contemporary. I don't know ... I just wasn't really all that impressed with him, his voice, or his performance. Sad in a way I guess is what I'd call it. The kicker for the evening for me was singing The Look of Love twice over. Unforgiveable. There are plenty of other 80's bands out there making the rounds these days who will offer you a way better performance for a lot less money. I'd suggest staying at home and playing your insipid ABC cd or going to see one of the other harder working bands.
